Botswana is a relatively flat country dominated by the flat, sandy plains of the Kalahari. There are no mountains and very few hills. During your safari in Okavango Delta, hills are almost nonexistent. As you head out to Chobe National Park, you will come across small hills especially in the Savute area.
Tsodilo Hills located in northwestern Botswana is one of the best rock paintings destinations in Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tsodilo is one of the highest points in Botswana as a relatively flat country, and a peculiar place shrouded with mystic and fascinating history.
Aha Hills located close to the Namibia and Botswana border is another popular hill. It is located 50 km from Gcwihab. The hill is rough and consists of stony blocks, and good hiking shoes are recommended when climbing Aha.
Another attraction in Gaborone is the Kgale Hill within the city limits, and overlooking Gaborone Dam and the mall capital, and a perfect site for sunset viewing. It is labeled the sleeping giant measured at 4222 feet taking 1-2 hours to climb.
Botswana forest ecosystem is diverse. Just in the Okavango Delta, there are over one thousand plant species thriving. It is populated by mopane, swathes of papyrus, groves of wild date palm, acacia, woodland etc from the tongue of the mopane to the Chief’s Island and around the whole of the delta. Along with beautiful water channels, lagoons and islands are trees, shrubs and bushes of various species. Camel thorn trees, silver terminalia, wild seringa, Burkea Africana and Kalahari apple leaf adorn the sandy open spaces of the delta. Botswana has six main forest reserves located in Chobe District. These are Chobe, Kasane, Kasane Extension, Maikaelelo, Kazuma and Sibuyu forest reserves. The Chobe Forest is surrounded by grasslands and mopane woodlands.
