BOTSWANA LAKES & RIVERS

Overtime, all ancient lakes from Okavango and Makgadikgadi have all dried up. Currently, Botswana only has Lake Ngami, which is a very shallow and undergoing the drying up process as it did with its predecessors. It is also unrecognizable as a proper lake during the drier season, and water levels fluctuate based on the rains and floods.

The main rivers in Botswana are Okavango, Linyanti, Kwando, Chobe, Thamalakane, Limpopo, Molopo, Boteti, Khwai and many more. Most of the rivers do not originate within Botswana and flow from neighboring countries with different river names. As an example, Cubango in Angola, Kavango in Namibia and Okavango in Botswana are basically the same rivers, and the latter empties directly into the Okavango Delta or Okavango Alluvial Fan. As for the Linyanti River, it traces its origin from Cuando River in South Central Africa flowing from Angola into Namibia and then Botswana as Kwando and Linyanti Rivers, and finally turning into the Chobe River meeting the mighty Zambezi in Zimbabwe and Zambia leading up to the thundering Victoria Falls.
