Sports Update:
The Batswana have an inherent interest for sports. In 1965, the Botswana National Sports Council (BNSC) was instituted with the objective to preside over all sporting matters in the country. The BNSC created the Botswana Games, held every two years for youths of 19 years old and below. The games serve as an instrument for young people to develop their skills in sports.
The Batswana’s strong fascination in soccer makes the sport very popular locally. Botswana’s national soccer team, the “Zebras”, qualified in the 2012 African Cup of Nations. Other sports of great local interest are volleyball and rugby. Botswana’s teams in both sports have scored some international victories in the past years.
Botswana’s long exposure to tennis has led to the country’s tennis players taking part in famous international tournaments like the Davis Cup. The country’s athletes have also made a good name in medium distance track events.
