Location Of Moremi Under Canvas
Covering approximately a third of the eastern portion of the Okavango Delta, the Moremi Game Reserve combines permanent waterways with drier areas, creating a reserve filled with unexpected contrasts and diverse wildlife. Although it is not one of the country’s largest reserves, its tall mopane woodlands and spreading floodplains fringed with majestic palms make it one of Africa’s most scenic wilderness areas. Riverine forests are dominated by jackalberry, mangosteen and sausage trees. The richly varied habitats make Moremi the ideal place to combine typical savanna game viewing with leisurely cruises along lagoons and channels, and abundant bird watching. Dense riverine forests are home to shy leopard and deep lagoons are inhabited by hippo, while the semi-aquatic red lechwe and sitatunga antelope can be seen wading the shallows. Buffalo, giraffe, lion, leopard, cheetah, hyena and jackal can all be spotted on the floodplains and among Moremi’s drier areas. A birdwatcher’s paradise, the rich and diverse habitat of the reserve is home to a surprising diversity of birds, with almost 500 species, from water birds to forest dwellers. The area is also well known for containing a significant percentage of Africa’s wild dog, which are regularly sighted in the reserve.
Safari Experience At Moremi Under Canvas
The diverse landscape of Moremi attracts a wealth of animal life, ensuring varied game viewing while staying at Moremi Under Canvas. Herds of elephant appear seasonally, quenching their great thirst with the abundant water in the region. Families often bathe together, wallowing in shallow, muddy waters or frolicking happily in deeper lagoons. The highly gregarious buffalo also enjoy the plentiful water and rich grazing in the region. In the early morning or late afternoon herds can often be spotted coming down to the water to drink, wading until waist deep to enjoy the cooling liquid. Older groups of bachelor males often stick close to water. The floodplains of Moremi shelter large numbers of zebra, waterbuck, kudu, red lechwe, tsessebe and impala. The elusive sable and roan antelope may be spotted venturing out of the mopane scrub to drink at selected watering holes. The beauty of these shy species, with the sable’s sweeping horns, jet black coat and bold white markings, and the roan’s larger stature and grey coat, are guaranteed to make any encounter a memorable one. The immense white rhino has recently been reintroduced into Moremi and guests may catch a glimpse of this lumbering giant. The large predators encountered in Moremi may include lion, spotted hyena, leopard and cheetah. However, the reserve is most famous for its African wild dog, boasting a high concentration of these rarely seen animals, with their fascinating social structure. Moremi is also an excellent area for birdwatchers, with the impressive wattled crane, distinguished by its white neck, long grey plumes and dangling facial wattles, and the long-legged slaty egret frequently spotted on the floodplains. Arnot’s chat forages among the mopane scrub, which is also favored for its camouflage by the barred owl.
