OVERVIEW ON DUBA PLAINS CAMP IN OKAVANGO DELTA

Duba Plains Camp is one of the Delta’s most remote camps, a small intimate camp on an island surrounded by expansive seasonally flooded plains and shaded by tall ebony, fig and mangosteen trees. Due to its proximity to the Panhandle, Duba Plains is one of the first camps in the northern Delta to receive the annual floodwaters. Accommodation is made up of six tents complete with en-suite bathroom, outside shower, and a small veranda overlooking the floodplain. Pathways link the tents to the main area, comprising dining room, swimming pool and fireplace, all raised to take in the view. Activities include day and night game drives to view wildlife such as lion, buffalo, elephant, hippo in the channels and red lechwe on the floodplains; birdlife is abundant. Duba was the setting for Relentless Enemies, a National Geographic documentary of the classic lion and buffalo interaction unique to the area.

Location Of Duba Plains Camp

The 90 000-hectare Kwedi Concession in the northern Okavango Delta comprises Duba Plains and Vumbura areas. While its western parts totaling to 35 000-hectare, notably the large Duba Island, have seasonally inundated floodplains and small palm islands, the eastern region consists of diverse habitat types: permanent swamp, seasonal floodplains, acacia woodlands, and mopane / Kalahari appleleaf stands. Superb scenery, open plains and permanent waterways, coupled with spectacular birdlife, predator and prey interaction as well as some of the most consistent wildlife viewing in the region make it a legend among safari connoisseurs. The concession is leased from five communities through the Okavango Community Trust in a groundbreaking partnership, ensuring that the benefits of ecotourism are shared with rural stakeholders. While Duba Plains is famous for its large elephant herds and lion and buffalo interactions, the plains game, bird, leopard and other sightings complete the experience. During the annual flooding the abundance of waterbirds is simply astounding – with a multitude of herons, egrets, lapwings and jacanas on show.
